Preparation

Effectively preparing for your laser treatment can prime your skin and maximize your benefits. You may receive specific preparation instructions accounting for your medical history, skin type, current medications and/or skincare regimen, target concerns, and more. In general, our team may advise you to:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning
  • Cease the use of harsh facial treatments, such as chemical peels and other lasers
  • Discontinue retinoid use

Procedure

At the start of your laser session, one of our laser specialists will cleanse your skin and apply a topical numbing agent if necessary. The numbing cream will be removed before treatment. Once the skin is dry, your specialist will then place protective eyewear over your eyes. They will gently glide the handheld laser device over your face, evenly delivering energy to each targeted concern. The device uses the patented Intelligent Optical Tracking® technology to regulate application and energy distribution, allowing for optimal contact with your skin and an even treatment. You may feel a warm and tingling sensation, but patients typically describe the overall experience as comfortable.

Afterward, your specialist will apply a soothing ointment to the area. The entire in-office session will last about 30 to 45 minutes.

Recovery

Clear + Brilliant laser treatments are associated with minimal downtime. Immediately after your treatment, the laser may cause your skin to appear red and feel slightly swollen, comparable to a sunburn. Your skin may start to peel and shed damaged skin cells, revealing the fresher skin beneath.

For the first 48 hours after treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, hot tubs, saunas, direct sun exposure, and makeup application to prevent irritation. After the second day, your skin may continue to feel rough as the dead skin cells work their way to the surface. You should keep your skin moisturized and avoid picking at it while it peels.

After about five days, you may notice smoother skin as the healing cycle completes. You should continue to take care of your skin by using a gentle cleanser, wearing sunscreen daily (and reapplying when necessary), applying hydrating moisturizers, and avoiding harsh or drying products. If you are not sure what products to use, your skin specialist can help you design a skincare regimen that works for your lifestyle and skin type.
