Procedure
IPL photofacials use intense pulsed light (IPL) to treat many skin conditions, including acne scars, broken capillaries, rosacea, fine lines and wrinkles, spider veins, and hyperpigmentation. Many patients opt for photorejuvenation treatments over laser technology. Photorejuvenation requires less recovery compared to laser treatments. Photorejuvenation is also very versatile, being able to be performed anywhere on the body, other than the eyelids.
Dermatology, Laser & Surgery of Carnegie Hill uses the M22™ Universal IPL, a premier photorejuvenation system. The M22™ Universal IPL uses Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT), which delivers medical-grade IPL treatment. The M22™ is customizable to different skin conditions. It utilizes a computer-enabled filter recognition which enhances safety and usability. The M22™ uses contact cooling technology to make sure patients feel as comfortable as possible during their procedure.
Treated Conditions
IPL photorejuvenation can treat a wide variety of skin conditions that may appear on the body. During a consultation with our dermatologists, we can determine if IPL will provide the results you are seeking, as well as how many treatments may be necessary.

Ideal Candidate

Not everyone is a candidate for an IPL photofacial. Patients who have a suntan or patients who have deep skin tones are not candidates for IPL, as there is too much risk of hyperpigmentation. A consultation with our dermatologists at Dermatology, Laser & Surgery of Carnegie Hill can determine if IPL photorejuvenation is right for you.
IPL is performed as an in-office procedure by one of our dermatology providers. IPL treatment takes about 15 to 60 minutes to perform. For your protection, you will wear a protective set of goggles during the procedure. A cooling ointment is also used to ensure you are comfortable. One of our dermatologists will hover a handheld device over the treatment area. You may feel the pulsating light, but it should not be painful or uncomfortable.
Expectations
Following your IPL photofacial, it is best to keep the treated area moist and hydrated after your procedure. There might be some slight discomfort a few days after your procedure. Ice packs can be useful to relieve any swelling that might occur. Aloe can also be useful for this. You’ll want to avoid sun exposure, wear sunscreen, and limit any way you can damage the treatment area. The team at Dermatology, Laser & Surgery of Carnegie Hill will give you more instructions during your in-office procedure.
Treatment Duration
Most patients respond very well to three treatments, although some require six treatments spaced approximately one month apart. During your consultation at Dermatology, Laser & Surgery of Carnegie Hill, our dermatologists can help you understand how many IPL treatments you’ll need to find the best results.
Resurfx™
ResurFX™ laser skin treatment can help reduce hyperpigmentation, sunspots, brown spots, mild acne scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks. Like an IPL photofacial, ResurFX™ laser skin treatment is non-ablative, meaning it maintains the top layers of the skin during the procedure. Peeling, oozing, or crusting should not occur, either. Constant contact cooling is used to ensure patient comfort.
Skin Benefits
Laser skin treatment can encourage collagen and elastin production by stimulating fibroblasts, which are cells responsible for regeneration. Collagen and elastin will make the dermis (the deep layers of the skin) thicker and plumper, making the skin look healthier overall.
IPL Photofacial Can Treat
- Fine Lines and Wrinkles
- Crow’s Feet
- Acne Scars
- Age Spots
- Warts
- Uneven Skin Tone
- Sunspots and Sun-Damaged Skin
- Sagging or Drooping Skin
Insurance
Insurance coverage for photorejuvenation treatment typically depends on whether it is a cosmetic or medical procedure. If your photorejuvenation treatment is for cosmetic purposes, insurance is less likely to cover this. If you have a skin condition that is a medical concern and photorejuvenation treatment would help, your insurance might be more likely to help. Every healthcare plan is different, however. The team at Dermatology, Laser & Surgery of Carnegie Hill can help you find out if your photorejuvenation treatment would be covered through health insurance.
