Procedure

Rosacea is a common skin condition that makes the skin appear red or flushed. It often begins in adulthood but can begin at any stage in life. Rosacea can occur from environmental, emotional, or dietary factors. Rosacea may become more present during increased sun exposure and hotter temperatures. Rosacea Types

Our rosacea specialists in NYC are skilled and well-versed in detecting and treating rosacea. This disorder is often mistaken for acne, and the treatments for acne will accentuate the effects of rosacea. When seeking treatment for rosacea, it’s important to choose a rosacea specialist to prevent flare-ups and symptoms from worsening. There are several types of rosacea:

Offered Treatments

Patients with more subtle forms of rosacea often use medication and ointments. For patients that would like to see more dramatic results, laser and light-based treatments can reduce redness and inflammation. Our rosacea specialists offer both Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL) and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments. While these respective treatments have different methods of treating rosacea, both can help patients find long-term relief. Our NYC dermatologists can discuss which treatment type may be right for you.

Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment (Pdl)

PDL treatment works by sending light energy to blood vessels under the skin. Light energy can break up the blood vessels that cause facial redness. PDL treatment is a safe procedure that will not cause any damage to the skin. As rosacea-causing blood vessels begin to dissipate, symptoms should gradually improve.

INTENSE PULSED LIGHT THERAPY (IPL)

IPL treatment works similarly to PDL treatment. IPL uses light to disrupt blood vessels under the skin. Your body will absorb the blood vessels that cause rosacea as they begin to shrink in size. IPL can also stimulate collagen production and treat other skin conditions. However, the light energy is not as targeted as PDL treatment.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

  • Beams of light are sent toward blood vessels under the skin
  • Creates several wavelengths ideal for treating multiple skin conditions
  • Multiple treatments yield the best results
  • Minimal recovery time

Treatment Amount

It is best to undergo multiple rosacea treatments to achieve optimal results. Most patients typically require anywhere from 2 to 6 sessions, depending on the severity of the rosacea and what procedure is chosen. Our New York dermatologists can help you determine how many treatments are right for you.

Ideal Candidate

The best candidates are patients that wish to reduce redness, flushing, or other blemishes from rosacea. The board-certified dermatologists at our practice have years of experience in diagnosing rosacea and helping patients receive the treatment suitable for them.

Anesthesia

General or local anesthesia is not typically required for rosacea treatment. A topical numbing cream is applied to make sure patients are comfortable during their procedure.

Expectations

Patients can continue daily activities after laser rosacea treatment. Redness around the treatment area after laser rosacea may occur. This should subside within a few days.

Results

Rosacea treatments will reduce the appearance of redness and flushing. Patients can expect a more consistent and smoother skin tone after using medications or undergoing laser or light-based treatments. Because laser and light-based treatments dissipate the blood vessels that cause rosacea, patients can expect long-term results.
